Legal Considerations for Nurses Practicing in a Telehealth Setting

During the last century the world has become increasingly reliant on a variety of technologies to manage information needs. Escalation in deployment of remote technology to enhance health care, accompanied by expanded public and private reimbursement for distant care, indicates increasing acceptance of these technologies. Yet many legal and regulatory questions regarding the provision of health care using these technologies remain.

One of the consistent questions about telehealth nursing is whether there is a need for certification or additional credentialing for telehealth practice.

This question is being raised even though the last century has been replete with the introduction of new tools and technology in health care, resulting in a system that is quite adept at incorporating new technologies into patient care and that understands the expectation that users are trained, proficient and safe in using any new technology.

  1. Technology is no doubt helpful but there are certain things that only humans can effectively provide. Telehealth is an example of a negative effect of technology with regard to the quality care given to a patient, because it may only render distant care.
Even though training, safety and proficiency are ensured to the nurses, I still think bedside care is always the best.

  2. Telehealth offers one of the few concrete and readily available ways to dramatically increase the efficiency of the healthcare industry. However, as Phoenix said, bedside care is always the best in order to fully establish rapport to the patients.

  3. Telehealth is becoming a viable health care option for Medicare beneficiaries in rural areas. and could make to respiratory patients living far from health facilities.
However, as Pheonix said Telehealth only render distant care thus, bed side care the most effective way for caring patiets will be non sense.

  4. Telehealth is indeed helpful because of long distance communication with the healthcare provider. But I have to agree to what phoenix and kenneth said that bedside care is the best because of the fact that you can actually see the patient and you can think of ways how to promote health.

  5. technology is indeed an advantage of distant patients. but i agree with my classmates that bedside care is still the best to observe the patient very closely

  6. Telehealth will lead in the promotion of the responsible use of technology in health, ensure quality in its endeavors, and empower its clients through information and knowledge exchange. However, rapport and effective nurse-patient relationship will not be well promoted.

  7. Though telehealth could be an option for the distant patients to seek for health care, the care that it could provide would never be as good as the care that a nurse could render face-to-face.

  8. Telehealth seems to be a very promising application of the new technology in healthcare. But I think that a personal encounter with patients is still more effective in providing quality care.

  9. Telehealth is the delivery of health-related services and information via telecommunications technologies. Telehealth delivery could be as simple as two health professionals discussing a case over the telephone, or as sophisticated as using videoconferencing between providers at facilities in two countries, or even as complex as robotic technology.

  10. Telehealth maybe be of help but nothing could compare to the nurse-patient interaction we are practicing right now.

  11. Growing use of and interest in the use of telecommunications technologies in the delivery of health care services has led to far-ranging discussions on telehealth (or "telemedicine") and its potential role in the health care system.
it is indeed a great help to us, especially the nurses.. it will not only make our job easier, but also, we can maximize our time..

  12. Telehealth is a way for nurses to transfer information easier through networking and internet. It makes the jobs of the nurses easier. There is no need to travel just to send information. With the help of telehealth one click.. then the information is there.

  13. Its simply amazing how technology arises every year. Example of this is TELEHEALTH or the sharing of health information/records through computers from one place to another. Especially during travel or when living in remote areas. Its efficient because you dont have to go in the hospital to see the results. Its safe and effective. But its better to see your doctor for more clarification and understanding.

  15. Technology has affected society and its surroundings in a number of ways. In many societies, technology has helped develop more advanced economies including today's global economy and has allowed the rise of a leisure class. It also affect the field of health care which makes nurses' work much easier but it is not a signal that our way of providing care for the patient will be lessen. :) LOVE:CARE

  16. technology will always help us improve our lives. Telehealth can do much in transfer of information from one health care provider to another. it can help a HCP in deciding what treatments to implement. it will take time for answers to come through mails so telehealth will save time and effort. :)

Although technology has great impact on humans, never will robots or other products of technology replace the role of nurses in taking good care of the patient.

  17. Telehealth is not enough to cure a patient because doing bedside care or a nursing visit provides a nursing interaction and promotes trust to nurses.

  18. ...telehealth would be a great help but physical presence and social interaction is very important for clients to be satisfied and to gain dependence to nurses.
